Daniel Rodrigues: football in Guinea & the Galomaro hospital

‘The children were playing football and I went and played with them. Whilst I was doing this, I photographed them. I liked the result and shot some more similar photos.’ This is how Daniel Rodrigues explained, to P3, how the winning photograph of the World Press Photo, in the category of ‘Daily Life, came about. The photographs that he sent us depicted improvised football games and the corridors of the Galomaro hospital – they were captured in March 2012, when the Portuguese photographer was in New Guinea, on a humanitarian mission.
