Durante 50 anos, Citizen Kane – o Mundo a seus Pés, de Orson Welles foi considerado o melhor filme de sempre pela revista Sight and Sound. Mas em 2012, Vertigo – A Mulher que Viveu Duas Vezes, de Alfred Hitchcock, passou a ocupar o primeiro lugar neste top. Este ano, Citizen Kane volta a estar em destaque num outro top, o dos 100 Melhores Filmes Norte-Americanos divulgado agora pela BBC.

A BBC pediu a 62 críticos de cinema internacionais - do Reino Unido, Europa Continental, América do Sul, Austrália, Índia, Médio Oriente e Estados Unidos da América - que fizessem uma lista por ordem decrescente daqueles que consideram ser os 10 melhores filmes norte-americanos.

As obras deviam ser julgadas por cada crítico apenas no plano emocional e não pela importância histórica do filme, por exemplo. A única condição é que o filme tivesse recebido financiamento norte-americano, por isso o seu realizador podia ser de qualquer outra nacionalidade. Com estes pressupostos, o melhor filme -  o número 1 para cada crítico - recebeu 10 pontos e o filme que menos apreciaram recebeu 1 ponto. Estes pontos foram somados para produzir a lista final dos 100 Melhores Filmes Norte-Americanos agora divulgada pelo site da BBC.

E se Orson Welles e o seu filme Citizen Kane – o Mundo a seus Pés ficaram em primeiro lugar nesta lista, o realizador Francis Ford Coppola (cujos filmes não apareciam no top 100 da Revista Sight and Sound de 2012) viu agora duas das suas obras estarem em destaque: O Padrinho (1972) aparece em segundo lugar e O Padrinho – Parte II (1974) está em décimo lugar na lista dos melhores filmes norte-americanos de sempre e o realizador tem quatro das suas obras na lista.

Comparativamente ao top 100 da Revista Sight and Sound de 2012, A Desaparecida (1956), de John Ford, sobe duas posições neste top da BBC, ascendendo do sétimo lugar para se tornar o quinto melhor filme de sempre.
A obra 2001 – Odisseia no Espaço (1968) de Stanley Kubrick também sobe de posição, alcançando o quarto lugar ocupado por A Regra do Jogo no top da Sigh and Sound, filme dirigido por Jean Renoir em 1939. O filme mudo dirigido por F. W. Murnau em 1927, a Aurora, desce do quinto para o sexto lugar no top da BBC.

Serenata à Chuva (1942), de Michael Curtiz, Psico (1960), de Alfred Hitchcock e Casablanca (1952), de Stanley Donen e Gene Kelly são, respectivamente, os filmes que ocupam o sétimo, oitavo e nono lugar no top da BBC e que anteriormente, tal como O Padrinho, não constavam da lista de melhores filmes divulgada pela revista Sight and Sound.

Nos últimos lugares evidenciam-se dois dramas que tiveram datas de estreia muito díspares. No 100.º lugar encontra-se O Grande Carnaval De Billy Wilder (1951) e, em 99.º lugar, está o filme mais recente em termos temporais da lista, 12 Anos Escravo, que deu a Steve McQueen o Óscar de Melhor Filme em 2014.
